I need help with ser and ir?

July 4th, 2009
  • i know in the preterite tense they are identical... so does that mean they mean the same thing? and can you give some sentences as examples? thanks :)

  • ser means to be something. In general, not at any specific time. Estar is for being something at a specific time. like soy un gallito means I am a little rooster. But estoy bien means that I am good, you might be sad a minute later,

Ir means to go, the verb conjugations are as the previous answerer said. va vamos voy.

  • I know what you mean. "Ser" in preterite is:

    Yo fui
    tu fuiste
    el fue
    nosotros fuimos
    ustedes fueron
    ellos fueron

    "IR" in preterite:
    Yo fui
    tu fuiste
    el fue
    nosotros fuimos
    ustedes fueron
    ellos fueron

Both conjugations look identical, indeed, they are identical and have the same pronunciation. But, being different verbs they mean different things. You have to depend on the context of each sentence to know which verb is being used in each case:

Yo fui a tu casa (I went to your house)
Tu fuiste a la playa (you went to the beach)

Yo fui alumno en ese colegio (I was a student in that school)
Tu fuiste mi mejor alumno (you were my best student)

As you can see, verb "IR" is usually followed by preposition "A" (or other prepositions as POR, PARA)
verb SER is followed by a noun or an adjective.

  • okay ser means to be permantantly.
    soy
    eres
    es
    somos
    son.

I am tall and pretty= soy alta y bonita.

    ir means to go.
    voy
    vas
    va
    vamos
    van.

we go to the park= vamos al parque
